In this week’s round-up of our ‘photo a day project’, we continue our hot and dusty adventures around Göreme before hopping on another overnight bus for Şanlıurfa, where interesting dishes and a surprise football match awaited.
Here’s what we got up to in Turkey this week!
May 12th 2014. Off with the fairies. No visit to Cappadocia would be complete without a stay in a fairy chimney house, so we found the prettiest one in Göreme and checked in. A full review and our thoughts on staying in a cave hotel soon.
May 13th 2014. Off the beaten path. In our pursuit to capture the perfect photo, it often requires us to go off road, get a little lost and occasionally scale small mountains. All in a day's work. ;)
May 14th 2014. City of gold. The days are getting increasingly long and hot so a refreshing cup of tea with a view in the cool of the evening is just the setting to unwind and process the day's events.
May 15th 2014. Balloon pursuit. An invitation for a second ballooning experience, this time joining the ground crew as they chased the balloons, was a behind the scenes opportunity we leapt at even though it meant another early bleary-eyed wake-up call.
May 16th 2014. Holy carp! Stories of a fish-filled lake in Şanlıurfa was too much to resist for keen angler me, but, as it turns out, it was an ornamental pool in the grounds of Halil-ür Raman Mosque. It's said that death awaits anyone who dares eat these sacred fish.
May 17th 2014. Football friendly. Having been assured that I wouldn't have to run too much, I was convinced to fill in for an absent goal keeper in a social football match between friends. Fortunately, our side was quite good and won 6-5.
May 18th 2014. Turkish sushi. Staying with locals, we had the great opportunity to try Çiğ Köfte, a kneaded mixture of herbs, spices, durum wheat and finely ground raw meat. No longer allowed to be sold in restaurants, this South Eastern Turkish favourite can only be prepared at home. Would you try it?
