A Letter to Japan

Many thanks to my dear friend Miyuki for translating this letter, and for everything. May tomorrow be all that you dreamed and more.

Dear Japan,

I’ve been thinking about what I want to say to you for some time. I have written several versions of this letter trying to pen exactly what I want to tell you, but everything I write just seems to fall so far short that I just end up deleting it and starting over.

I’ve come to realize that the reason I’m not happy with anything I have written is that I feel so deeply moved and grateful for being able to spend this time with you, that I don’t even know where to begin. I wanted this letter to be perfect. I wanted it to express all that it has meant to us, all that you mean to us. But there are some things that even words can’t express. So in all of the versions I have written I keep coming back to this simple phrase: Thank you. Thank you so much. For everything.

Thank you for opening your doors and hearts to us. For sharing your rich culture. For showing us new ways. For challenging us. For embracing us. For making us who we are today and accepting us despite all our flaws.

To all our friends, new and old, thank you for sharing this journey with us. For extending friendship across cultures and languages, and over time and distance. For proving that we are more the same than different.

To the Suga family, we don’t know how we can ever repay you for all that you have done for us. Thank you for being our Japanese family, for opening up your home to us, and for going above and beyond to help us no matter the inconvenience to yourselves. Thank you for sharing special moments in our lives with us. To have you at our Japanese wedding, as our witnesses and as our friends, means more than you will ever know. You made the day complete.

To Hayato and Ken-ken, thank you for being our Japanese brothers. To think that we have known you for more than half your lives still blows our minds and we can’t tell you how much of a pleasure it has been to watch you grow up – from elementary school boys hosting tea parties in your room for us, to young men at junior high and high school discovering your interests and what you want to do in life. We’ll always remember our time together in NYC and countless domestic trips, stuffing ourselves silly at Sweets Paradise and finding bamboo shoots at the park. Wherever our home is, is your home too.

To our friends in Ishinomaki, Kobuchihama, Funakoshi – thank you for opening your hearts to us. For showing us what it means to live and love. For your patience in teaching us new things. For showing us the strength found in courage and determination. Together we walk stronger, and we promise that we’ll share all that you have taught us with the world, and always return to see Tohoku shining brighter than ever.

To our students, thank you for making our days meaningful. For giving your best. For making us proud, and even for the twinge of sadness when you didn’t need us anymore, knowing that it is because you reached your language goals that you are ready to spread your wings and live your dreams. For showing us the power of language and communication. For making us smile and teaching us more than we have taught you.

To all the countless strangers who have helped us across the country. Thank you for being so generous, caring and patient. For helping no matter what the language barrier or inconvenience. For welcoming us with a smile. For making Japan feel like home.

It can never be enough. But all we can say is thank you. Thank you so much. For everything. Our hearts are open and waiting, and we’ll be leaving a big piece of it here with you.

Until we meet again,

Jessica & Hai
