“Best Blog Posts” is back in its new monthly format! Here we feature some of our favourite recent reads by other bloggers.
This month, we were taken on journeys, given something to think about and got some travel planning advice. It's great to be back!
Here's what we enjoyed reading this month.
1. Where to go in Jordan by A Taste of Travel
I love posts that touch on more than the obvious. While we may visit a country primarily to tick something amazing off our bucket lists (and why wouldn't we!), there's a lot be experienced by taking a little side trip here or there. In this post, Jenny of A Taste of Travel suggests some great places to visit in addition to Petra when in Jordan. I don't know what a knafeh is, but I'm already mentally planning my trip to Amman just to get one!
2. The Accidental Spirit Quest by Britt Skrabanek
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Ms. Skrabanek's work. She's articulate, sassy and knows how to tell a good story. Pretty good traits for an author, I'd say. In this post, Britt, Mr. H and their two cats travel across the country in search of a new home. The inbetweenness of places. It's something that's entwined with travel but that often gets summed up in minimal sentences to get to the “When we arrived at…” part. Here Britt takes us on the journey of “getting there”. Brilliant and thought-provoking.
3. Trover: Our New Favourite Way to Plan Our Travels by Never Ending Voyage
Have you ever seen a picture of a destination that draws you in, makes you want to pack your bags right away? So much inspiration is drawn from images in the travel industry, yet there is also often a gap. Where is this place and how do I get there myself? In this post, Erin of Never Ending Voyage introduces us to a useful travel planning tool that helps us do exactly that. It's a website/app called Trover in which users share their beautiful travel photos but also attach further information on the location and even handy travel tips. Interested in trying this out for ourselves! Don't forget to check out the contest at the end of the post in which you could win $750 in travel vouchers!
4. The Truth about Elephant Tourism by Mindful Wanderlust
I read this powerful post some time ago and it has stuck with me ever since, as powerful stories do. Wandering the Natural History Museum in London last month with its vast array of animal specimens, I found my thoughts wandering to this baby elephant and a particular image in this post (you'll probably know which one I mean when you take a look). Here Giselle and Cody talk the reality of animal entertainment and take us through their time giving this innocent being comfort and love in his final days and hours whilst volunteering at a nature park in Thailand. Both beautiful and heart-wrenching, this post will have you rethinking the role all of us play in the world of animal tourism.
5. How to Travel Light on OurOyster
This guest post by Nicholas Fern on OurOyster is all about the art of packing light. As travellers who carry their packs around constantly, we can say Amen to that. Nicholas says, “It’s all about being ruthless. If you are ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ about an item then I can tell you now, don’t take it.” Find out just how many socks and t-shirts he recommends and tips on how to pack what you do bring. Here in Turkey it's going to be hard to resist not adding contents to my backpack, but I'm just replacing stuff that I really do need, I swear, Nicholas!
