As I've been thinking recently about sharing more of how we travel, this week I found myself drawn to practical posts, ones that get down to the real nitty gritty and ultimately lead to better and more elongated travel. Plus a couple of stories to capture the imagination? Yes, please!
This is what I've been reading this week.
1. How I Afford to Travel: Saving Money on Clothes by Crazy in the Rain
It's probably the most asked question of any travel blogger: “How do you afford to travel?” In this post, Anna of Crazy in the Rain (AKA The Legendary Adventures of Anna) focuses on one way she saves money to travel, namely not buying clothes when she doesn't need them. It may sound like a simple idea, but one so often lost in a world of consumerism. I liked Anna's balanced view on the topic and warning of not buying stuff just because it's super cheap (boy, have I done that more than a few times!). And she's living proof that hanging on to clothes until they have really seen better days doesn't have to be at the expense of looking good. Go check out the collages at the end of the post in which she shows how she has repeatedly worn the same items on her travels over the years and come out winning.
2. How Not to Lose Your Digital Memories While Travelling by Hitch-Hikers Handbook
Just the thought of losing even some of our travel photos is enough to induce panic and sleepless nights of frantic cross-checking. In this post, Hitch-Hikers Handbook remind us not only of the importance of backing up your travel photos but getting in the habit of doing so systematically. Good news is, these days we can safeguard our digital memories in a number of ways, and the Hitch-Hikers Handbook give a pretty sweet list on cloud services to get us started.
3. 20 Days Till RTW Liftoff by Divergent Travelers
Have you ever wondered what it takes to prepare for extended travels? In this post, the Divergent Travelers share their to-do list and their progress on it 20 days out from a two-year round-the-world adventure. While everyone's list will be different, there's a lot of items here to help any potential long-term traveller with things to consider before a big trip. Ah, I really love a good list; especially the crossing off part! Good luck guys and happy travels!
4. Drinking Bull's Blood Wine in Eger, Hungary by Ferreting Out The Fun
Before reading this post, I'd never heard of the town of Eger in Hungary. But after hearing Heather's account of a picture-perfect day in the glorious sunshine and a rather intriguing legend, I'd now go there in a heart-beat. Some may say that alcohol already gives them super powers, but bull's blood wine that can conquer an army of 40,000? Now that's something that'll persuade even the most ardent non-drinkers among us to raise a glass.
5. Hey! Does She Have a Gun?!! by Browsing the Atlas
You learn to expect the unexpected on your travels, but who would have thought an Indonesian dance would have the audience on the edge of their seats not for the riveting story-telling or graceful movements, but a rather distracting elephant in the room? In this post, Juliann of Browsing the Atlas takes us through her thoughts as she watched an afternoon cultural performance go from quietly mesmerizing to slightly alarming.
