In this week’s round-up of our ‘photo a day project’, we were reminded that Instagram was celebrating its 4th birthday with the tenth Worldwide Instameet and, upon discovery that a meet hadn’t already been planned, we set out to organise and lead our own. Little did we know how much coverage and support we’d get from the Split community in such a short time. As it turned out, the weather was perfect and we had a great day visiting the sights with friendly locals.
Here’s what we’ve been up to recently!
September 29th 2014. Shells by the seashore. One huge advantage of pebble beaches is the fact that you don’t drag half of it home with you like what happens when you visit sandy ones. Which do you prefer, sand or pebble beaches?
September 30th 2014. Cathedral of Saint Domnius. Strictly speaking, only the bell tower is dedicated to Saint Domnius or colloquially Saint Duke, with the actual church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It’s regarded as the oldest, active Catholic cathedral in the world and hasn’t undergone a complete renovation since being initially built as a mausoleum in the 4th century!
October 1st 2014. Slave dungeons. The cellars of Diocletian’s Palace have been used for various purposes across the centuries, including as storage for food and wine, a water storage facility, sewage and a garbage dump. Nowadays it houses various souvenir shops and is one of the film locations for #GameofThrones.
October 2nd 2014. Split, Croatia. Surrounded by the Mosor mountain range on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other, Split is an attractive coastal city in the region of Dalmatia with some of the most hospitable people we’ve met.
October 3rd 2014. Mirror finish. On a particularly calm night, Split’s protected coastline becomes one great mirror reflecting the star speckled sky.
October 4th 2014. Breaking news! We were pleasantly surprised about being contacted for an interview by a national newspaper regarding our travels and the upcoming Instameet. Jessica is only pretending to read the paper as it’s all in Croatian. ;)
October 5th 2014. Marjan Hill. A huge thanks to Lara, Vana, Ella and Rea as well as Josh and Mia of Travel with Bender for joining us at our Worldwide Instameet in Split, Croatia today! It was #nicetoinstameetyou at #WWIM10Split.
