In this week’s round-up of our ‘photo a day project’ and our last full week in London, we maximize the sightseeing value out of our London Pass and spend some quality time with the fun and talented group of photographers that form Instagramers London.
Here’s what our week looked like.
Photo a day project: March 24th 2014. By torchlight. Had the pleasure of crashing Instagramers London’s official 3rd birthday drinks at The George Inn right underneath The Shard. Don’t know about you, but we think this new addition to the London skyline looks even more impressive up close at night.
Photo a day project: March 25th 2014. Spiral staircase. Built to commemorate the devastating “Great Fire of London” which destroyed most of the city in 1666, The Monument stands 61 metres high and affords all who climb the 311 spiralled steps a 360 degree panoramic view of the rebuilt city in all its glory.
Photo a day project: March 26th 2014. Beefeaters. One of the great things about visiting London is experiencing old traditions that continue as part of the current workings of the city. The Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London aren’t just dressed up tour guides to make you feel like you are going back in time, but are on duty as the Royal Bodyguard, serving to protect the Tower and the Queen. As to why they are nicknamed ‘beefeaters’? It’s believed to be derived from the fact they used to be paid in meat.
Photo a day project: March 27th 2014. Life Guards. With roots dating back to the mid 17th Century, The Household Cavalry consists of the two most senior regiments in the British Army, The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself is a member and holds the position of Colonel-in-Chief.
Photo a day project: March 28th 2014. Golden view. We just have one word for St. Paul’s Cathedral: must-see. Wander the magnificent floor and crypt, spend some time quietly contemplating in the Whispering Gallery and climb the winding steps to some of the most breathtaking vantage points in London. Here we are in the Golden Gallery, some 528 steps (or 85m) from the Cathedral floor. Worth it!
Photo a day project: March 29th 2014. Rendezvous. Getting reacquainted with my love of black and white street photography with the local Instagramers London group.
Photo a day project: March 30th 2014. Watchmen. We would be remiss if we came to a place like the UK and didn’t at least touch on the very real history that has inspired many wondrous imaginations and shows such as the popular ‘Game of Thrones’. On guard!
