A Letter to Japan

For English, please scroll down. 日本のみなさんへここしばらく、何を伝えたいか考えていました。このメッセージもなかなか言いたいことを全て伝え切れず、消しては書いてを繰り返していました。そして、気づきました。何を書いても満足できないのは、みなさんと過ごせたことにただただ感動、感謝していて、どこから始めたらいいかわからないから。この手紙は完璧に書きたい。私たちにとって日本で過ごした時間が、そしてみなさんが、どれだけ大事であるかを全部伝えたい。でも、言葉では表現しきれない。そして、何度も書き直した全てメッセージに共通するのは、「ありがとう。本当に心から感謝しています。」という言葉でした。心を開いてくれて。豊かな文化に触れさせてくれて。新しい方法を教えてくれて。挑戦させてくれて。受け入れてくれて。今の私たちを形作ってくれて。そして、至らないところも含め認めてくれてありがとう。昔からの、そして新しい友達たちへ。この旅を私たちと一緒に過ごしてくれて。文化や言葉、時間や距離を超えた友情を築かせてくれて。違いより似ていることの方が多いことに気づかせてくれてありがとう。菅家へ。私たちのためにしてきてくれたことに対して、お礼を言っても言い尽くせません。日本の家族になってくれて。お家に招き入れてくれて。面倒くさいことも、私たちを助けるために躊躇なく何でもしてくれて。私たちの特別な瞬間を一緒に過ごしてくれてありがとう。証人、友達として私たちの日本式の結婚式に列席してくれたことは言葉では言い表せないほど嬉しかったです。あの日を完璧にしてくれてありがとう。はやととケンケンへ。日本の兄弟になってくれてありがとう。あなたたちの人生の半分以上を知っているということは、今でも信じられないです。おままごとをしていた小学生のあのときから、今や興味や将来の夢を追っている中学生、高校生と成長した二人の姿を見ることができてとても嬉しいです。一緒に行ったニューヨークや数え切れないほどの国内旅行、バカみたいに食べたスイーツパラダイス、公園でのたけのこ堀り、一生忘れません。石巻、小渕浜、船越の友人たちへ。心を開いてくれて。生きること、愛することの意味を教えてくれて。新しいことを教えるときの辛抱強さ、勇気と決意の中にある強さを見せてくれてありがとう。これからも共に力強く歩み、あなたたちが教えてくれたことを世界の人々に伝えていきます。東北が最高に輝いている姿を見るために必ず戻ってきます。生徒のみなさんへ。充実した日々をありがとう。一生懸命頑張ってくれて。誇りに思わせてくれて。言語とコミュニケーションの力を教えてくれて。笑顔にしてくれて。私たちが教えた以上に、私たちに教えてくれてありがとう。私たちが必要なくなったときはちょっぴりさびしかったけど、それは目標に達して、夢を実現するために次のステップに行ったからだよね。手を差し伸べてくれた日本中の見知らぬ多くのみなさんへ。優しくしてくれて。気にかけてくれて。辛抱してくれて。言葉の壁や不便さがあっても、助けてくれて。笑顔で向かい入れてくれて。日本を故郷のように感じさせてくれてありがとう。何度言っても言い尽くせない。ただただ言えるのは、ありがとう。本当に心から感謝しています。私たちの心はいつも開いて待っています。そして、心の大きな一部をここに置いていきます。また会う日まで。ジェシカ＆ハイ Dear Japan, I’ve been thinking about what...
